Welcome to the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. We are excited to share information with you regarding what we teach, how we teach, and our quest to provide the best possible education for every student in the River Trails School District. Our goal as a learning organization is to inspire our diverse student population to develop the knowledge, skills, and character necessary to excel in an ever-changing world. Additionally, we value the diversity of learning styles our students exhibit and embrace the challenge of creating life-long learners.

The adoption of the common core standards by the Illinois State Board of Education has prompted changes in the District.  A comprehensive update of the English/Language Arts program occurred during the 2011-2012 school year at RTMS and the 2013-2014 school year at the elementary schools.  Additionally, a new common core aligned math program was implemented at the Middle School while a new elementary program was implemented during the 2015-2016 school year.  A new science curriculum is being integrated into all K-5 classrooms as a means to teach the Next Generation Science Standards.  During the 17-18 school year, our Next Generation Science Standards curriculum is moving up into grades 6-8.

The District continues to adapt to the expectations of the common core standards in all content areas.  Changes in curriculum and instruction are designed to prepare students for success with college and career readiness. The shifts in teaching and learning will continue as a means to sustain an educational environment where students are inspired to excel.
